Sastra means Science, systematized knowledge of Nature. Not only physical sciences, Sastra includes spiritual sciences as well, as Indian Philosophy deals with both  Matter and Spirit, Purusha & Prakriti.

Siddhanta Sastra means the Science of Astronomy & Hora Sastra means the Science of Astrology.

P N Oak was right when he said that the English word Hour is a malpronunciation of the Sanskrit word Hora. Hora Sastra means the Science of Hour, Time.

When I met the astro scholar, Avanoor Asan, he was              ecstatic when he described the Master, Varaha.  Said the Master was an Avatar, who came to redeem this infinite Ocean of Knowledge which is the  Science of Time, this Hora Sastra , Hora Sastra Maharnava pratharane.

Avantiko Muni manany avalokya Samyak 
Horaam Varaha Mihiram ruchiram chakara

Savithru Labda vara prasada refers to Revealations received by the Master in higher states of Consciousness, symbolically depicted as boons from the  Sun ! 

An astronomer, mathematician and astrologer par excellence, Varaha strode the scene like an intellectual colossus, contributing to all the three branches of the triune Astro Physics, the Thriskanda Jyotis Sastra – Siddanta, Samhita & Hora.

Kalya  Swa     Vikrama Griha Prathibha Kshatani
Chittotha Randhra Guru  Mana Bhava Vyayani.
The Quintessence of BHS are these two  verses

Planetary states are    seven,
Exalted is Sampoorna,
Devoid of strength positional is Riktha
In inimical, Is Anishta Phalada called !

Fallen from Exaltation is Avarohee
Madhya in houses of  fiends,
Arohinee when rising,
And Adhama in houses inimical !

Samyak balina  swa tunga bhage
Sampoorna balavarjitasya Riktha
Neechamsa gathasya satrubhage
Jneya  Anishtaphala  Dasa   prasoothu

Bhrishtasya tungath Avarohi samjna
Madhya bhaveth sa Suhrud Ucchabhamse
Arohinee nimna parichyutasya
Neecharibhageth Adhama bhaveth Sa !

BHS is Varaha’s magnum opus. wherein he spells out the principles of the Science of Time, in 384  verses of golden Sanskrit Poetry.

BHS has a great competitor, BPHS, Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra, consisting of 4000 verses.

Scientific Knowledge in Poetic Form

All the Eighteen intuitive sciences & the Eighteen eternal arts are in magnificent poetic form. There are 400 K verses in Mythology, 400 K verses of Siddhanta, Samhita & Hora and millions on other subjects also. The Law of Epistemic Correlation, that all branches of Knowledge are interrelated, find its fulfillment here, as All knowledge is One Knowledge.

In Indan Astronomy, while calculating the Sheeghra Anomaly based on the Geometrical Model of Parameswara, the following verse is given by Puliyoor

Arka Sphutoniham Kheda Mandasphuta mihoditham

Sparsajya Sheegrakendrardha Labhda karnathara hatha

Karna Yoga hritha bhooya sparsa chapatmaka kritha

Shoditha sheegrakendrardhal syath phalam sheegrasamjnakam
To get Sheeghra Anomaly,
Angle between planet and Sun
Deduct Sun’s Longitude
From Ecliptic Degree.

Sheeghra Anomaly = Ecliptic longitude of planet – Longitude of the Mean Sun.

x, Sheeghra Phalam is the angle formed between the Sun, the planet and the Earth. It is computed as per the formula.

Tan A/2 – x = ( b – a) /( b + a) Tan A/2

”where A is the Sheeghra Kendra, a is the Ravi Manda Karna ( Sun’s distance ), b the Graha Manda Karna ( distance of the planet from the Sun ) and x the Sheeghra Phalam “

Artistic Knowledge in Poetic Form

“Yatho Hasta thatho Drishti,
Yatho Drishti thatho Manah
Yatho Manah thatho Bhaava,
Yatho Bhaava thatho Rasa.”

Eyes go where the hands are
Mind goeth after eyes biune
Whither Mind goeth, Bhava manifests
With Bhava, Rasa, mood is evoked.

Kavim Puranam anusasitaram
Anor Aniyamsam anusmared yah
Sarvasya Dhataram acintya-rupam
Aditya-varnam tamasah parastat

The Ancient, the Poet of all Poets,
Subtler than the subtlest,
Of Form Unthinkable,
Resides in all as Love

Being the Substratum of all,
Beyond worldly desire,
And Transcendental,
Should be meditated upon.

Chandra Siddhanta II, Theory of Luna

In the Orient, Lalla contributed heavily to the Lunar Theory, as did Newton, Ptolemy & Brahe in the Occident !

Both are  great Civilizations and none plagiarized from the other !

John Playfair, mathematician,
Extolled the Eternians,
For their possession of a Calculus
Equivalent to Trignometry.

(  Did not Einstein say
Indians taught us Maths ?
Or the great Laplace, that System Decimal
Is Indian in origin ? )

The multi step algorithms
Of mighty Hindu Astronomy
Is known as Graha Sphuta Ganita,
Base of all Panchang computations.

We have not defined Vipata Kendra,
The  Vipata Anomaly,
Vi means without
Patha means Node.

Vipata Anomaly means Angle
Between Position and Node.
This is the Second Correction,
Position reduced to Ecliptic.

Manda Anomaly means Angle
Between Position and  Aphelion
Sheeghra Anomaly means Angle
Between Position and  Sun

By Position we mean
The Position of the Planet.
Aphelion is a Point,
180 degrees away from Perihelion.

By the Sun’s celestial pull !

The Fourth deals with The Variation
Moon accelerates at 0 and 180
And decelerates at 90 and 270
Fourth Kendra Sin ( 2*T + 6 Signs ) * 2145

All these Four
Are major perturbations.
Ten more are there
Needing corrections trignometric!

Anomaly is defined as the Angle
Between Position & Perihelion
There is no Eccentric Anomaly,
In Indian computations !

Chandra  Sphuta Siddhanta

The Moon, in his journey of the Zodiac, through the 27 constellations, creates the 27 Nakshatras,  which have been defined as the Lunar Mansions of Hindu Astronomy, each one of them occupying 13 degrees 20 minutes of the Zodiac.

This is the Equation given for the Moon’s largest perturbation. The Moon seems to be carried away by the immense gravitational pull of the Sun, causing its Ecliptic longitude to vary as much as  1.3 degrees. This has been referred to as the third major angle, Kendra,  between Sthithi & Mandoccha in Ganitha Nirnaya and as the second Anomaly in Greek Astronomy, anomaly being the angle between position and perihelion.

Where Mc = Chandra Madhyamam, Mean longitude of Chandra, T = Thidhi = Longitude of Chandra – Longitude of Soorya

Working on Chandra  Siddhanta,
Major Theory of the Moon,
Fourteen Kendras, angles were plotted
By ace astronomers.

Small, small Manda anomalies,
Angles between position & aphelion
As fourteen major perturbations
Of the Moon were identified !

The Essence of Sidddhantas Eighteen
Is the Sanskrit Ganita Nirnaya
Puliyoor studied  all eighteen
Plus Aryaabhaateeya and Maha Bhaskareeya.

Siddhantas  Arya, Brahma Sphuta,
Pancha Siddantika and Siddhanta Siromani,
And came out with a gem
Based on Parameswara’s  Model Geometric !

The Longitude Corrected Thrice,
Manda means Reduction to  Heliocentric
Parinathi means Reduction to  Ecliptic
And Sheeghra means Reduction to  Geocentric.

There is no joy in the Finite.
Na Alpe Sukham Asthi.
Infinity = Bliss
Anandam Brahma.

This may seem to the worldly wise
A too ultra-worldly statement !
But this is true indeed
And endorsed by the wise !

Embrace Infinity to enjoy
Immensity of the Cosmic
Liberty of the Transcendent
And Joy of the Immanent.

Finite indicates wordly Life,
Which is full of sorrow,
Sarvam Dukham, Sarvam Shoonyam
Sarvam Kshanikam, Sarvam Vyartham !

There is no happiness in Indra’s Heaven !
Even Emperors search for mental peace !
Na cha Indranam sukham kinchil
Na sukham Chakravartina !

Mental Peace can only be attained
If you live like a Yogi.
Sukham Asthi Viraktheshu
Muner Ekanta Jeevita.

Enlightenment = Perpetual Bliss
Sukha Neervana Roopatha !
Sensory Pleasures = Bondage
Hard Sacrifice = High Heaven

Of Relative Knowledge & Absolute Knowledge,
Apara Vidya & Para Vidya

The Knowers of Brahman
Speak of Knowledge as Twofold
Relative Knowledge & Absolute Knowledge,
Apara Vidya & Para Vidya

Ithee hi yad Brahmavido Vadanti,
Para chaiva Apara cha.
Apara Vidya = Relative Knowledge
Para Vidya = Absolute Knowledge

Chemistry, Physics, Biology et al
Are Sciences of the Relative !
Even Astronomy, Maths & Astrology
Are all Relative Knowledge !

The Fivefold Ephemeris, Pancha Anga
Is nothing but Apara Vidya
Pancha Anga means Five Limbs,
The Five Limbs of Time Eternal !

Lunation = Thidhi = 12 degrees
Lunar Longitude – Solar Longitude,
There are fifteen of them.
Known as the 15 Kalas of the Moon

Lunar Mansions = Nakshatras
There are twenty seven of them
Caused by the Moon’s journey
Through the 27 constellations !

Based on First Planetary Hour, Kala Hora.
There are 24 Kala Horas,
Dina Dwadasamso Matha Kala Hora

Eternal Combinations = Nitya Yogas
Lunar Longitude + Solar Longitude,
There are twenty seven of them.
Dealing with general characteristics of men.

Half Lunation = Karana =6 degrees
Thidhi Ardham Karanam Proktam
These Five Variables constitute
Mighty Eternal Hindu Ephemeris !

 

Religion is derived from Relegere,
Which means going back to the Source.
Go back, go back and go back,
Till you reach the Vibrationless Origin !

Eternal law is a universal religion
Embracing all Religions in its fold.
Prophets of all religions are accepted as Rishies,
And worshipped as Divine personalities !

Jesus was a yogi who declared
Aham brahmasmi as Ego sum Alpha et Omega
The Prophet was another great Yogi,
Who was an epitome of excellence in all !

Lord Buddha occupies a prominent place,
As He is part of the Ten Incarnations.
He renounced Kingdom for Enlightenment,
And imparted Wisdom as the Four Noble Truths !

Eternal law is ecumenical and syncretic,
Incorporating Sarva Dharma Samabhava.
Some are indulging in calumny against her,
Which will be an exercise in futility.

There is only One Religion,,
And that is the religion of humanity,
There is only One Language,,
And that is the Language of the Heart !

There is only One  God
And He is omnipresent.
Quintessence of all Sastras,
Do Good, Never Evil !

This is in line with Shaw,
Who averred Only One Religion,
Even though thousands of interpretations,
Of it exist in the wide world.

Love All and Serve All,
As the greatest is Intellectual Love
Educate All, as Wisdom is Guru,
The Celestial Teacher of Teachers !

Hate None, Help Ever, Hurt Never,
As Man and Self are important.
Forgive Ever, as forgiveness itself,
Is manifestation of Love Intellectual !
