Durga Sooktam or Hymn to the Mother Goddess

                                                                                            

Press out we shall, the Soma juice,
To the Sacrificial Fire, Agni,
May the Omniscient,
Destroy our enemies.

We need Thy help, Agni
Protect us from hindrances
Like the boatman who redeems,
Let us cross this ocean of Samsar!


Om Jatavedase sunava masomamarati yato nidahati vedah
Sa nah parshhadati durgani vishva naveva sindhum duritatyagnih

I take refuge in the mighty Mother
Durga, of golden hue,
Resplendent with the fire of Tapas, 
Consort of the Supreme

And bestower of Karma,
Salutations to Thee
Skilled in ferrying
Devotees across the mighty Samsar river !


Tamagnivarnam tapasa jvalantim vairochanim karmaphaleshhu jushhtamh
Durgam devii sharanamaham prapadye sutarasi tarase namah


O Sacrificial Fire
Praiseworthy Thou art
May we surmount all impediments
With Thy Grace !

(May our lands expand
And our children happy !)

Agne tvam paaraya navyo asmaansvastibhiriti durgani vishva
Pushcha prithvi bahula na urvi bhava tokaya tanayaya shamyoh


O Sacrificial Fire,
Take us beyond evil, like Redeemer Atri,
Like the able boatman,
Protect us from all evils !
 

Vishvani no durgaha jatavedassindhunna nava duritatiparshhi
Agne atrivanmanasa grinanoasmakam bodhayitva tanunamh

We invoke Agni,
The Mystic Fire,
Vanquisher of enemies,
Potent and invincible,

May that Fundamental Agni
Protect us from misfortunes !
O Sacred Fire which gloweth,
Protect all with Thy Radiance 
 
Pritanajitam sahamanamugramagni huvema paramatsadhasthath
Sa nah parshhadati durgani vishvakshamaddevo atiduritatyagnih

O One praised in sacrifices
With Swaha as wife
Thou foster Bliss.
Thou art the Repository of Bliss!

Invoker of Sacrifices,
Make Thyself happy,
Granting us prosperity.

Pratnoshhikamidyo adhvareshhu sannachcha hota navyashcha satsi
Svanchagne tanuvam piprayasvasmabhyam cha saubhagamayajasva


O mighty Indra,We shall follow Thee
Blessed with Bliss and prosperity general
Let those who live in Heaven
Bring forth seventh Heaven, Vaikunta !

Gobhirjushhtamayujonishhiktan tavendra vishhnoranusamcharema
Nakasya prishhthamabhisamvasano vaishhnavim loka iha madayantamh


We shall try,
To understand Katyayani,
Meditate we shall
On Kanya Kumari

May Durga guide usm
To Enlightenment !

Om kaatyaayanaaya vidmahe Kanyakumaari dhiimahi Tanno durgih prachodayaath
